May 27, 2010 SP-PSA International port welcomed NYK's 81,171 DWT (Deadweight Tonne) vessel, "NYK Aquarius", to mark the first call to Vietnam of the SCX service of the Grand Alliance (Hapag-Lloyd, NYK and OOCL) to the West Coast of the U.S.
The "NYK Aquarius" has a capacity 6,238 TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit) and together with 7 sister ships will offer a direct weekly service sailing to Laem Chabang ,Singapore, Kobe, Nayoga, Tokyo, Sendai, Los Angeles and Oakland.
The SCX service is the fourth direct weekly service from SP-PSA to the U.S.
Said Mr Le Huy, General Director of NYK Line Vietnam, "Following US East Coast direct call (AEX), SCX, calling SP-PSA, is the 2nd direct service of Grand Alliance, to bring more benefits to Export customers without transhipment and operational risk, especially in the coming peak season. SCX is also strategically set up for fastest transit time from USA (Los Angeles, Oakland) and Japan (Tokyo, Nagoya, Kobe) to Vietnam.
"Together with international standard facility of SP-PSA, SCX will serve both Import and Export customers with the most convenience and the best service quality. Importers and Exporters, located in Ba Ria - Vung Tau, Dong Nai, Binh Duong, will enjoy shorter distance in dropping their cargo to SP-PSA for SCX service. The Grand Alliance's current two direct services are contributing their part in developing Ba Ria - Vung Tau and surrounding economic areas to become the most dynamic.
"Not in a distant future, Grand Alliance plans to have Cambodia export cargo barged to SP-PSA and connected via SCX service to US West Coast, that offers more choices to all customers than currently. Domestic feeder option from Quy Nhon, Da Nang to SP-PSA for direct service loading is another viable plan of Grand Alliance when they launch more direct services in coming time. "
Mr. Le Cong Minh, Chairman and General Director of Saigon Port and Chairman of SP-PSA expressed his thanks to NYK and the Grand Alliance, "We are delighted to have been entrusted with this service by NYK and the Grand Alliance. With no less than four direct weekly sailings to the U.S, SP-PSA now offers an unrivalled choice for Vietnamese importers and exporters."
